The Alexandrine -- raw, pahari tota, Kashmiri raw depending on who you ask -- is the parrot most Pakistani households start with, and the first question every new owner asks is when it will talk.
The general answer is around a year, sometimes seven or eight months with consistent daily work, and males tend to build a larger vocabulary than females. Plenty never talk at all, which is worth knowing before you buy one specifically to talk.
What seems to matter:
- The same short word, repeated, at the same time each day
- One person doing the teaching at the start
- A tame bird first -- a frightened bird is not learning anything
- Quiet, without a TV competing
