Keeping birds in a Pakistani summer — cooling a cage without killing the bird

Birds die quickly in heat, and a cage on a balcony that was in shade at ten in the morning is in full sun by one.

Things people do, with varying success:

  • Moving the cage indoors for the middle of the day
  • A wet cloth over part of the cage, leaving the rest open for airflow
  • A fan, but never blowing straight onto the bird
  • Misting with a spray bottle
  • Freezing a water bottle and standing it beside the cage
  • Extra shallow water dishes for bathing

The two mistakes that keep coming up: covering the whole cage so there is no ventilation at all, and putting the cage directly in front of an air cooler, which soaks the bird and then chills it.

Signs a bird is in trouble: wings held away from the body, open-mouth panting, sitting on the cage floor.

What is your setup, which birds, and what temperature does your room actually reach?
