Fleas, flies, lice, mites and ticks are the complaint vets here hear more than any other, and the market is full of products of very uneven quality.
What is in use:
- Spot-on treatments applied between the shoulder blades
- Oral tablets, monthly or three-monthly
- Collars
- Sprays and powders
- Medicated shampoos, which kill what is on the animal now and prevent nothing
- Home remedies, which mostly do not work and some of which -- anything with undiluted essential oils, and any dog product used on a cat -- are dangerous
The other half is the house. Most of a flea population is in the bedding and the carpet, not on the animal, so treating only the pet means it is reinfested by the weekend.

And a warning worth repeating: permethrin products made for dogs kill cats. Check the label before you use one bottle for both.
